Why buy ethical gifts?

Being more conscious about what you purchase is so important in today’s world. We need to stop the endless consumption of buying cheap, fast and unsustainable items. We all need to think about the materials items are made from, whether the person who made it was paid a fair wage and the impact on the environment. Let’s buy less this holiday season but buy quality handmade items which are not going to pollute the planet, or even better gift an enjoyable experience!

  1. Flower & Spice Discovery Gift Set.

2. A Custom Handmade Demure Hat.

It’s hat season for sure! But why not get your own unique custom design? Yuki at Demure loves to create unique pieces that express the persons style and personality. Here is a little info about sustainability at Demure

“As I make hats, I am very careful so I don 't waste fabrics and other materials. And the inevitably-produced remnants go to one big bag. And during my only 1-week break around Christmas period, I go through these scraps and make something with them. The advantage of working with these scraps is that there is so much choice of materials. I wouldn't be able to afford all these fabrics in lengths just to create one hat. Meanwhile the challenge is that the selection is so random so I have to focus and make right combination of materials while being aware of the available amount. This can take lots of energy and time.As a professional designer, I want to make most of the advantage mentioned above by dealing with the challenge well. I don't want to end up with something which looks like a bad patchwork piece. To make the piece in the photo, it was great to have big selection of fancy wool tweed pieces so I could put together to make layers of colours in graduation with some consistency in texture. The scraps were all from production of popular skipper caps. For me, sustainability comes from respect for resources that we have, for the people who work hard to produce and bring them to me. Rather than 'recent realisation' or even 'marketing plot'. Where I grew up, the resources are limited and mutual respect of people are the base of society. Being sustainable is a standard and nothing to earn you credit.”

I’m a big fan of Demure hats and you will see my collection popping up on my Instagram feed regularly. 4. Magnesium Bath And Body Gift Box From Of The Islands

I have been using the Of The Islands magnesium range for a few months and it has become a staple of my daily care routine. I use the spray daily (normally on my stomach after showering in the evening) and the magnesium scrub once a week before showering. In the Winter time I will be having more baths and using the magnesium bath salts. I find the natural magnesium soaks in to the skin easier than other magnesium products I have tried and feels less sticky or dry afterwards. I'm trying to reduce my carbon footprint so it's great to find natural magnesium that comes from the Netherlands and is stored in glass bottles that I can reuse in my home afterwards. These products would make a lovely gift of self-care for your loved ones. Check out the Of The Islands shop HERE or have a look at their inspiring images on their Instagram feed HERE.
