Kemp Gadegaard: Unique Slow Crafted Contemporary Womenswear
About Kemp Gadegaard
I recently came across this Berlin based womenswear brand whilst browsing Instagram. Since leaving Bermuda where there is little opportunity or buying organic, slow crafted clothing I have been enjoying discovering the world of slow fashion since returning to Europe. The problem with living in Bermuda is there are hardly any shops on the Island and even less International brands that accept a Bermudian bank account or ship goods to Bermuda. I love the simple but stylish designs from Kemp Gadegaard and cant wait to see what they bring out next season!
Silk fabric is made out of the fibers produced by silk worms. The silk worm makes the fibre to spin into a cocoon, inside of which it later transforms into a moth. Silk is incredibly durable due to its high tensile strength – higher than any other fiber. A strand of silk is stronger than a wire of iron in the same diameter. It's naturally hypoallergenic (the most hypoallergenic of all fabrics), and is completely non-toxic. This means that neither the production of silk nor the breakdown of the fiber releases toxins into the environment.
Bamboo fibers derive from bamboo plants, the fastest growing woody plant in the world. The high growth rate of bamboo and the fact that bamboo can grow in diverse climates makes the bamboo plant a sustainable and versatile resource. Bamboo crops require very little water and landmass, usually grown on marginal land unsuitable for forestry and agriculture. Land use is of global importance as the world’s seven billion people compete for water, food, fibre and shelter. Because it grows so quickly, bamboo is an easily renewable resource. It requires 1/3 the amount of water to grow compared to cotton and has no natural pests.
Bamboo fibres are highly absorbent and breathable, soft and light. It is also naturally hypoallergenic. Bamboo is softer than cotton, with a texture similar to a blend of cashmere and silk. The garments feel airy and light.
All of their cotton garments use 100% organic cotton. Organic cotton is grown without the use of toxic pesticides or fertilizers, so their impact on the soil and water is greatly reduced. Not only does organic cotton use substantially less water to grow, but is also is softer and feels better on your skin than conventional cotton.
Their organic cotton is mostly grown in Turkey, with some heavier weights being produced in India. Cotton is the perfect summer fabric. Just enough body to hold it's shape, with luscious drape and movement.
Now I can't wait to wear my Outrenoir dress. The Outrenoir dress is a feminine evening dress made out of bamboo silk, with a lower panel in sheer silk chiffon. Oversize cut, U-shaped neckline and back. Stone button opening on the back. Round armhole and wide strap. It is a summer dress that is elegant and daring. 100% organic bamboo, 100% silk. Proudly made in Spain.
