Why the World needs more Health Coaches.

Health Coaches are changing the lives of people all over the world. Doctors offices, Wellness Spas and Health Clinics are employing Health Coaches to try and improve the general health and wellness of their clients.

Why did I become a Health Coach?

Four years ago I decided to take an online course to become a Certified Holistic Health Coach with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I was living and working in Bermuda as a Physiotherapist at the time and felt I needed to do some further training in other areas of healthy living besides physiotherapy. I wasn't planning a career change, just an expansion of my current health related knowledge. As Bermuda is a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the online aspect of the course was essential for me. The course gave me the tools to talk to my clients about other areas of their health besides the physiological aspects I was used to addressing.

I get asked many questions about 'What is a Health Coach,What does the training consist of, How long does it take to train' etc. So I wrote this post to hopefully answer many of those questions. I am also now an affiliate of the course which I am open with talking to people about, which means I get paid a commission when people sign up to the course through my affiliate link. Through being an affiliate I am also able to pass on a discount to my followers who are interested in exploring a similar career path to me.

About the course

The course takes about a year to complete and provides training in all areas of health and wellness. You have access to their student dashboard via their app, which has all the lectures and course material at hand for you to enjoy wherever you are! No carrying around your laptop or heavy books, it can all be read via you phone (great if you commute to work and have some time to either listen or read some of your course material). During the year you cover over 100 dietary theories, all of the information provided is very recent and up to date with current research findings etc. There are four exams that are spread throughout the year which are also done online. The course take up around 4-6 hours a week of study depending on how interested you are to read and study the information given. I used to download the lectures or podcasts onto my iPad and listen while I was cooking dinner or cleaning the house. That way it didn't really take up any specific 'study time' and still left me with plenty of free time to socialise and exercise as I wished. There is no need to take time off from work or limit any other activities you enjoy in order to be able to complete the course.

The course was set up by Joshua Rosenthal who I think is one of those people you cant help but like. If you listen to some of his seminars I think you will feel the same. He has collaborated with many well known specialists in the area of health and wellness such as: Deepak Chopra, Dr. Mark Hyman, David Wolfe and many more. Also as part of the course they teach you the business side of working for yourself, marketing and building a website. This really helps you to get on your way with starting to work as a health coach and getting yourself out there. For me this was great as I had no previous knowledge of any of these topics and I learnt some vital skills in marketing and managing my finances.

Who is the course for?

In my opinion this course is not for those who do not have any previous health or medical training. I feel it is a great addition for people who already have skills such as as yoga or pilates teachers, physiotherapists, nurses, acupuncturists, physical educators, personal trainers etc. Those people who already have experience working face to face with people and some health knowledge. The course does not however certify you do become a nutritionist, this is a protected title only achieved by studying a degree course.
